PROGRAM

From Classroom to Boardroom

What is PMP?
The Placement Mentoring Program (PMP) conducted by the Student Alumni Relations Cell seeks to provide mentorship to final-year students in a variety of core and non-core sectors such as finance, analytics, consulting, IT/software, etc., to help them with their placement process. This year's program also includes mentorship for graduating students who wish to pursue higher education. The program accomplishes this through contributions from recently graduated batches who have gone through similar placement procedures/higher studies preparation and are thus familiar with the problems that may be encountered. The service connects mentors and mentees, allowing the latter to discuss tactics to use when looking for work in a specific profession. PMP kicks off the initial interaction between mentors and mentees, which they may continue at their own pace and according to their requirements, with intermediate follow-ups to address any hurdles that may occur.

FAQs

Why should I become a mentor with PMP?

As an alumnus/alumna, this will be your first opportunity to aid the student community and future batches with your expertise and experience. As a PMP mentor, you will be able to actively contribute to the success of your juniors while also remaining linked to the institute.

What is the further procedure after I register?

Mentees will be assigned to you in your desired professional sector when the mentor and mentee registrations are completed. You will have the option of selecting the number of mentees you wish to mentor. The dialogue will then be initiated by your respective mentees, and you will be able to decide on a course of action together. There will be a few follow-ups to help you work through any issues.

How will my personal details be used?

Names, roll numbers, and contact information will be kept private until the allocation procedure is completed. Your contact information will only be disclosed to the mentees who have been assigned to you. Only your job profile will be made public during mentee registration.

What is Grad Mentoring?

Placement Mentoring Program not just focuses on one particular set of graduating students that prioritize placements and their current decision lies in considering going for placements, we also include a considerable chunk of institute students that have intentions in pursuing higher education in various core fields and newer fields like management. Therefore we also include higher education to serve the maximum number of students in the institute.

How did this program benefit the mentee last year?

According to reports, the mentees profited greatly from the programme last year. The mentoring they received from their mentors was beneficial throughout the placement process. They were able to benefit from their mentor's experiences, and all of the helpful hints and recommendations assisted them with cracking placements and the whole process.

TESTIMONIALS

"One of the mentees remained highly enthusiastic and curious throughout the program, making excellent use of the opportunity. The other mentees were also actively engaged and regularly sought guidance whenever they had doubts. All the mentees were respectful of my time and other commitments. I began with an introductory session to understand their goals and subsequently guided them through the resume-building process up to the company test stage. I assisted them in preparing for company assessments and interviews, with a particular focus on profile-specific preparation where required. Our interactions were largely driven by their questions, which often led to deeper discussions and further guidance."

"Being a mentor in the Placement Mentoring Program (PMP) has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Over the past two years, I have had the opportunity to guide and support students through an important phase of their academic journey, and witnessing their growth and success has been truly fulfilling. The program creates a supportive environment where mentors can share their experiences, offer guidance, and build meaningful connections with mentees. It has been equally enriching for me, providing opportunities for learning, interaction, and personal growth. A special appreciation to the SARC team for consistently organizing and improving this initiative year after year. I would strongly encourage every student entering their placement season to make the most of this wonderful opportunity."

"I adopted a flexible mentoring approach, allowing my mentees to guide the discussions based on their needs. Initially, we focused on resume building and preparation for placement tests. I addressed their queries, provided suggestions, and shared insights whenever required. Throughout the program, I periodically checked in on their progress and offered support where needed. Rather than following a fixed blueprint, the mentorship was centered around helping them navigate challenges, providing guidance, and boosting their confidence through regular encouragement. One particularly memorable moment was when a mentee called me immediately after being shortlisted, seeking advice and preparation tips. We had a detailed discussion, and a few days later, they informed me that they had secured the offer. Sharing in their excitement and success was incredibly rewarding and reaffirmed the value of the mentorship experience."

"When I first connected with my mentees, I spent some time understanding their backgrounds, interests, and what they were aiming for during the placement season. I also shared my own experiences from college and placements so that they could relate to the process better and learn from some of the things I had gone through. We discussed useful resources and roughly planned how they could approach their preparation. As the season progressed, I stayed available for any doubts or concerns they had. Whenever there were logistical questions or things beyond my expertise, I tried to connect them with the right people who could help. Since placements can be quite stressful, I also made it a point to check in on them, keep them motivated, and reassure them whenever things did not go as planned. More than following a fixed structure, I focused on being someone they could reach out to whenever they needed guidance or support."

"Being a mentor in the IIT Bombay Placement Mentoring Programme was a highly rewarding experience. I had the opportunity to interact with students aspiring for higher studies abroad and support them in areas such as university selection, identifying research interests, and planning their applications. Most of our discussions were informal and need-based, taking place through calls and messages whenever guidance was required. It was satisfying to see students gain clarity in their plans and make steady progress towards their goals. Watching their hard work translate into admits from reputed international universities made the experience even more meaningful. I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this initiative and would be happy to contribute again by helping future students navigate their academic and career journeys."

"From the first call, I focused on understanding my mentees’ goals and sharing my own placement experiences to help them get started. I suggested useful resources, helped them structure their preparation, and stayed available whenever they had doubts or needed guidance. Beyond preparation, I tried to keep them motivated through the ups and downs of the placement season. One of the most rewarding moments was hearing from a mentee who had secured their dream role—it made the entire mentoring experience worthwhile."
